One of the Most Underrated Perks of Living in Ypsilanti Township
Most people focus on price per square foot when they’re evaluating a neighborhood. But one thing that rarely makes the spreadsheet, and probably should, is what you can actually do outside your front door.
Ypsilanti Township has quietly built one of the better parks and recreation systems in Southeast Michigan. And for a lot of residents, it’s one of those things they didn’t fully appreciate until they were already living there.
The township runs a full adult sports league program through its Parks and Recreation Department. Softball is offered in the spring, summer, and fall with three separate leagues: Co-Rec on Monday evenings, Women’s on Tuesday evenings, and Men’s on Friday evenings. Adult soccer runs in both the spring and fall. These are coed, community-oriented leagues. Not super competitive travel ball. Just organized, consistent, and a genuinely good way to stay active and meet your neighbors.
Registration is handled through the township’s online portal at ypsitownship.org, and you can also call their Recreation Department directly at (734) 544-3800 to get current schedules and availability.
The parks themselves are worth talking about too. Ford Lake Park is the township’s signature property: 98 acres along the south banks of Ford Lake with a public boat launch, fishing access, six tennis courts, a basketball court, soccer and softball fields, pavilions, wooded trails, and multiple picnic areas. It’s the kind of park that gets used every single weekend from spring through fall.
Central Park is another big one: 106 acres focused on youth and family sports, with soccer fields, a baseball and softball complex, paved and natural trails, and an accessible playground that was actually built by the community.
For people who want more of an indoor option, the Community Center has a gymnasium, racquetball and wallyball courts, an aerobic and dance studio, and a 50 & Beyond program for older adults looking to stay connected and active.
When people ask me what makes Ypsilanti Township a good place to live, I point to things like this. The infrastructure is already there. The leagues are already running. The parks are maintained and genuinely usable. That kind of everyday quality of life is easy to overlook when you’re focused on the transaction, but it’s the stuff that actually affects how much you enjoy where you live.
If you have questions about the area or want to know more about what different neighborhoods in Southeast Michigan have to offer, I’m happy to walk you through it.
