Neighbors Pushed Back on a Van Buren Township Rezoning. Here’s What Happened.

A quick one this week, but worth knowing about if you are in or around Van Buren Township. A developer wanted to rezone the old Harbor Club golf course from single family to multi family housing. The original plan called for 277 apartment units plus 92 single family homes on the property.

After neighbors pushed back, the developer scaled the plan way down, to just 93 single family homes. It still was not enough. More than twenty residents showed up to speak against it at the planning meeting, thirteen more submitted written letters, and one resident even found an old covenant on the property requiring it stay permanent greenspace. The concerns raised were the usual ones in a fight like this: added traffic, environmental impact, and strain on emergency response times.

The Planning Commission denied the rezoning. Unanimously.

This one is worth knowing about even though it is a smaller story, because it is a clean example of how the process actually works. A proposal comes in, the community shows up and makes its case, and the board that hears it has real authority to say no. If you own property near that parcel, or you are just curious how a zoning fight plays out from start to finish, this is a good one to have in your back pocket.
